Arrest Campaign Characterizes Protests in France

The French Interior Ministry announced the detention of around 200 individuals during the initial stages of the nationwide protest day across the country.

Although the protest movement did not succeed in its declared goal of “shutting everything down,” it gained momentum online over the summer, resulting in multiple disturbances that challenged the extraordinary deployment of 80,000 police officers tasked with dispersing gatherings and executing widespread arrests.

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau noted incidents such as a bus being set on fire in Rennes and damage to a power line that disrupted train services in the southwest of the country, emphasizing that some demonstrators attempted to create “an atmosphere of rebellion.”
