Washington Appoints Diplomat Benjamin Ziff as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Rabat
The U.S. Department of State has announced the appointment of veteran diplomat Benjamin Ziff as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Rabat, pending the completion of the nomination process for the new ambassador, Richard Duke Buchan III, whose confirmation is still awaiting Senate approval.
Ziff, who holds advanced degrees in political science, diplomacy, and national security from prestigious American universities, has been a member of the diplomatic service since 1988. He has held positions in several countries, including Australia, Israel, Colombia, Venezuela, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Cuba. Additionally, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Madrid, London, and Bogotá and was responsible for regional offices under the U.S. State Department.
Ziff arrived in Rabat on August 28, 2025, to take over from Amy Cothern, who had held the position since the beginning of this year. He will remain in the role on a temporary basis until the appointed ambassador officially begins his duties.
According to observers, this appointment underscores Washington’s commitment to maintaining continuity in its diplomatic relations with Morocco, given Ziff’s extensive experience in managing diplomatic missions and addressing complex strategic issues.
