Washington and Moscow Prepare for Trump-Putin Summit in Alaska Next Friday

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held phone conversations with his Russian counterpart on Tuesday in preparation for the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for next Friday in Alaska.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Tami Bruce stated that the summit was called at the request of the Russian president, noting that both sides reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the success of this meeting.

Bruce emphasized that President Trump aims to put an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine, considering the establishment of peace in Ukraine and worldwide a top priority for him. In a radio statement, Rubio stressed that the meeting between Trump and Putin should not be seen as a concession, adding that “holding a meeting for Trump is not a step backward.”

The U.S. president expressed hope on Monday that the meeting with Putin would lead to a swift ceasefire in Ukraine, confirming his intention to speak directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders immediately after his meeting with the Russian president.
