Divided by the Baleares, the Spanish People’s Party Blames Algeria for the Immigration Crisis

Sebastián Sagrierras, the spokesperson for the People’s Party in the Balearic Islands, sharply criticized the Spanish government for what he called its inaction in addressing the growing irregular migration crisis that is affecting the islands. He emphasized that Algeria is the primary source of undocumented migrants heading to the Balearic Islands.

In a statement to Europa Press, Sagrierras urged the government representative in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez, to take responsibility and not justify Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s lack of action on this sensitive issue. He noted that the situation is worsening, with the number of unaccompanied minor migrants rising by over 170% compared to 2024, with more than 3,000 arrivals since the start of the year.

The spokesperson pointed out that Algeria is the main source of irregular migration impacting the Balearic Islands, calling on the Spanish government to act swiftly at the European level and negotiate with Algeria to curb the influx of these waves. He considered that temporary solutions and ad-hoc responses are insufficient.

Sagrierras also criticized the Prime Minister’s threats to redistribute minors among regions, exempting areas such as Catalonia and the Basque Country, holding the government responsible for this irresponsible situation that exacerbates the crisis.

He concluded by affirming that the Balearic Islands have reached the limit of their capacity to accommodate more migrants, with several municipalities refusing to open new reception centers due to a lack of resources, calling for all political and legal measures to halt what he described as an “attack” on the islands.
