Report: Morocco Achieves Significant Progress in Food Self-Sufficiency

A recent report published in the journal “Nature Food” has revealed important findings regarding global food security, evaluating the level of food self-sufficiency in 186 countries around the world. The report focuses on the production of seven major food groups in comparison to the needs of their populations.

Morocco topped the list of African countries, achieving advanced positions among the top 50 nations concerning self-sufficiency in fresh produce, particularly in the areas of fruits, vegetables, and legumes.

The report highlights Morocco’s excellence in this field despite the significant challenges facing agriculture on the African continent, such as climate variability, inadequate infrastructure, and a shortage of technical resources. It shows Morocco’s capability to produce large quantities of fruits and vegetables to meet national demand, reflecting the importance of local agriculture and small farms, which are the backbone of the country’s food security.

Like Tunisia, Cameroon, and Malawi, Morocco enjoys strong fruit production that covers a substantial portion of local market needs, while the production of vegetables and legumes effectively supports national food security.

However, the report indicates that challenges related to investment and technology continue to pose barriers to achieving complete and sustainable self-sufficiency.

The report explains that a self-sufficiency index exceeding 100% indicates a surplus in local production, while an index below that signifies reliance on imports. This urges Morocco to enhance its agricultural infrastructure to achieve greater food independence.

The findings come amid Morocco’s ongoing efforts to develop its agricultural sector and improve production and distribution chains, reinforcing its status as a prominent model within the African region for food security amid climatic and economic challenges.
