Moroccan tomatoes are making their mark in the Spanish market, confirming their high competitiveness.
During the period from June 2024 to May 2025, Moroccan tomato exports to Spain witnessed significant growth, reflecting the increasing dynamism of the Moroccan agricultural sector and its ability to strengthen its position in the European market despite market complexities and price fluctuations.
Imports of Moroccan tomatoes to Spain rose by 40.33% compared to the same period last year, according to a recent report from the specialized site Hortoinfo.
May 2025 recorded the highest average price for Moroccan tomatoes at €2 per kilogram, compared to only €0.51 for farmers in Almería, highlighting the superiority of Moroccan products in terms of quality and competitiveness. Conversely, Morocco experienced its lowest price in October with an average of €1.07 per kilogram, while the same month was the best for Spanish farmers in greenhouses with prices reaching €1.42 per kilogram, reflecting price discrepancies according to seasons and local demand.
Almería province topped the list of Spanish regions importing Moroccan tomatoes, with a quantity of 13.71 million kilograms, at a cost of €16.83 million, averaging €1.213 per kilogram. It was followed by Granada with 9.62 million kilograms, Murcia with 8.17 million kilograms, and Barcelona with 6.01 million kilograms, which recorded the highest average price at €1.55 per kilogram. Finally, Madrid imported 2.82 million kilograms at an average price of €1.6 per kilogram.
Hortoinfo’s analysis revealed that December 2024 was the month that recorded the largest quantity of Moroccan imports, while February 2025 saw the highest total value, according to data from Estacom, the Spanish tax agency. During the study period, Spain imported a total of 80.29 million kilograms of Moroccan tomatoes, worth €115.35 million, with an average price of €1.44 per kilogram, confirming the pivotal role of Moroccan products in supplying the Spanish market during critical periods of the year.
