Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit launched extensive consultations on Saturday with leaders of political parties regarding the early preparations for the upcoming legislative elections scheduled for 2026. This move is in accordance with the directives of King Mohammed VI outlined in the recent Throne Day speech.
Representatives from all political parties in parliament participated in the meetings, discussing the key outlines governing the upcoming electoral process, particularly regarding the legal and regulatory framework. There was a strong emphasis on the necessity of establishing the electoral framework before the end of the current year.
In his speech on July 29, the King stressed the importance of respecting the constitutional deadline for the legislative elections, urging for the timely adoption of organizing laws and assigning the Interior Minister to oversee consultations with the parties to ensure proper organization of this event.
According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, various political parties praised this royal initiative, which solidifies the tradition of dialogue and coordination between the state and political forces concerning major national issues. They considered this step as enhancing the credibility of the electoral process and boosting public trust.
The parties also agreed during the meetings to submit their proposals regarding the legislative and regulatory framework for the upcoming elections by the end of August, in preparation for presenting the expected amendments during the next parliamentary session in the fall.
Authorities are striving to create the political and technical conditions necessary for the success of these elections, through a review of related electoral texts and improved coordination with political actors. This comes at a time when there is an increasing focus on raising participation rates and improving the quality of representation within the House of Representatives.
