Decline in Fish Landings at Essaouira Port
A report from the National Fishery Office details a 30% decrease in the quantities of coastal and traditional fish landings at Essaouira Port during the first seven months of 2025, in terms of weight, and a 1% drop in value.
The office stated that the total landings at the port reached 8,551 tons as of the end of July, compared to 12,265 tons during the same period in 2024. The market value of these catches was 163.87 million dirhams, down from 164.85 million dirhams the previous year.
In terms of species, the report highlights a 38% reduction in the landings of pelagic fish at Essaouira Port, amounting to 6,227 tons (29.75 million dirhams, a 38% decrease), compared to 10,021 tons (47.74 million dirhams) at the end of July 2024.
Conversely, the landings of white fish grew by 19% in weight and 20% in value, reaching 707 tons worth 30.84 million dirhams, compared to 593 tons (25.74 million dirhams) the previous year.
For mollusks, there was a 15% increase in landings by weight, totaling 750 tons, which generated income of 58.98 million dirhams (an increase of 15%), compared to 651 tons and revenues of 51.19 million dirhams during the same period in 2024.
Crustacean landings also rose by 4% in weight and 12% in value, reaching 864 tons, with revenues amounting to 44.27 million dirhams, compared to 829 tons and 39.65 million dirhams the previous year.
Nationally, the landings of coastal and traditional fisheries amounted to 6.14 billion dirhams at the end of July 2025, reflecting a 3% downturn compared to the same period in 2024. In terms of weight, the landings totaled 523,765 tons, marking a 16% decline from the end of July 2024.
