China Places Artificial Intelligence at the Heart of Its Educational Strategy

The Chinese Ministry of Education announced on Thursday a triennial action plan (2025-2027) aimed at reshaping higher education in line with national priorities and global technological challenges, placing artificial intelligence at the core of this transformation.

The plan focuses on developing and adapting new academic pathways in strategic fields, particularly those related to emerging industries and advanced technologies, while updating curricula to meet the needs of the economy and society.

Among the key measures planned are: strengthening core disciplines, launching multidisciplinary experimental centers, establishing national training platforms, and engineering institutes for elites, in addition to reforming evaluation and incentive systems for researchers and students.

Authorities emphasize that the success of this strategy depends on the autonomy of universities, which will be granted greater powers to restructure their curricula according to their educational mission and scientific standing.

Beijing sees this project as going beyond the education sector to serve a broader goal of reducing technological dependency on foreign countries and cultivating high-level talent, at a time when global competition intensifies over semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and advanced sciences. This way, China aims to solidify its position as a leading power in future technologies.
