Will August Save Morocco from the Absence of its Diaspora in July?

The ministry responsible for Moroccans residing abroad and migration affairs has witnessed a significant decline in the number of Moroccans returning to the homeland through various airports, especially the northern ports, which are typically bustling during July and August each year. Sources from “Express TV” confirmed that the ministry’s general secretariat, the general inspection, and the Directorate of Migration Affairs are looking to the upcoming weekend, coinciding with the beginning of August, as a crucial period to revive the slowdown experienced in the airports and ports across the kingdom. Traditionally, these places overflow with visitors during this season, but such crowds were notably absent in July this year, leading to substantial financial losses estimated in millions of dirhams due to the reduced influx of the Moroccan diaspora. There are hopes that August will alleviate the stagnation faced in July, especially since this month coincides with the annual holidays for many Moroccan families abroad.

A recent study indicated that the financial and economic crisis in Europe, along with the rising cost of living for tourists in Morocco during August, and the presence of alternative tourist destinations with lower costs, have contributed to the decline in the number of Moroccans living abroad returning home. A thorough assessment will be necessary after the conclusion of the “Marhaba 2025” operation to discern the true reasons behind this exodus from Morocco.
