Trump Threatens Russia with 100% Tariffs if Peace Deal Not Reached in 50 Days
In a meeting with the NATO Secretary General at the White House, former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Russia, threatening to impose “severe” tariffs of up to 100% on Russian goods and those of its trade partners if a peace agreement in Ukraine is not reached within 50 days.
Trump expressed his frustration over the lack of progress towards a ceasefire, stating, “We are very dissatisfied, and if an agreement is not reached within 50 days, there will be a 100% tariff.”
At the same time, Trump reaffirmed the United States’ support for Ukraine by enhancing the supply of Patriot air defense systems, noting that the funding will come not from the United States but from European allies like Germany, Norway, and Sweden.
This move indicates a new U.S. escalation, combining economic pressures on Russia and its trade partners with increased military support for Ukraine, all aimed at reinforcing NATO unity and its role in addressing security challenges.
Trump also hinted at the possibility of bipartisan legislation that would allow for tariffs as high as 500%, reflecting potential further escalation of economic sanctions.
Moscow downplayed these threats, labeling them as “theatrical stances” that do not change the reality on the ground. In contrast, Ukraine and NATO nations welcomed the measures, although doubts remain about their immediate impact.
These statements signal a clear diplomatic escalation, as the United States seeks through a mix of economic sanctions and military support to push Russia towards peace negotiations. However, risks persist, especially if Moscow retaliates with economic measures targeting its trading partners.
