Morocco Strengthens Its Position Among the World’s Top Cucumber Exporters
Morocco has made a significant mark as one of the leading cucumber exporters globally, with its export value surpassing $27 million in 2023, according to recent data released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This rising performance reflects the growing stature of Moroccan products in this vital agricultural and food sector, particularly due to their quality and increasing demand in European markets.
Global production of cucumbers and pickled cucumbers reached approximately 98 million tons in the same year, with China leading the way with a total output exceeding 77 million tons, representing over three-quarters of the global production. The global market for this product is estimated to be around $3.07 billion in 2023, expected to rise to $3.17 billion in 2024, and projected to reach $4.5 billion by 2035, with a compound annual growth rate of about 3.24% between 2025 and 2035.
The FAO emphasized that cucumbers and pickles are witnessing increasing popularity in diets worldwide. Fresh cucumbers are commonly used in salads and sandwiches, while pickles add a strong flavor to prepared dishes and fast food. In Morocco, cucumbers remain a staple in markets and kitchens, widely consumed in home-cooked meals and fast-food outlets, while pickles are gaining popularity due to changing consumption patterns and the search for balanced diets.
The FAO also noted that advancements in agricultural techniques, such as precision farming and vertical farming, have contributed to improved yields, ensured product quality, minimized environmental impacts, and secured supply throughout the year. Additionally, rising health awareness among consumers and a preference for natural, low-calorie foods have boosted demand for this type of vegetable.
Digital distribution platforms and multi-channel commerce have enhanced the presence of cucumbers and pickles in global markets, as tools like data analytics and digital marketing have become essential for understanding consumer trends and informing production and distribution decisions. This offers Morocco greater opportunities to position itself among the major players in this promising sector.
