Ecuador asserted during a press conference held in Rabat that Morocco’s autonomy initiative constitutes “the basis for resolving” the regional dispute over Western Sahara.
Gabriela Sommerfeld, Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Relations and Human Mobility, highlighted her country’s support for Morocco’s efforts to reach a political, realistic, and lasting solution to the conflict within the framework of the United Nations. This confirmation followed a meeting between the Ecuadorian minister and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, during which Ecuador reiterated its backing for the Moroccan initiative, emphasizing the importance of a political solution that is acceptable to all parties involved.
It is noteworthy that Ecuador withdrew its recognition of the so-called “Sahrawi Republic” in October 2024 and severed all ties with this fictitious entity. These positions align with the growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, which enjoys recognition and backing from numerous countries and international organizations, thereby enhancing Morocco’s standing in its efforts to resolve the regional dispute peacefully and sustainably, while respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
