Bourita: "The Partnership Between Morocco and Guatemala is a Model for South-South Cooperation"
In a meeting held in Rabat on Thursday between Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, and his Guatemalan counterpart Carlos Ramiro Martínez Alvarado, the depth and strength of the relations binding Morocco and Guatemala were reaffirmed. These relations are based on mutual respect and continuous coordination on various international issues.
Bourita emphasized that His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo de León believe that geographical distance does not hinder the enhancement of a strong and exemplary South-South partnership between the two countries. The Moroccan minister also praised Guatemala’s unwavering support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and its sovereignty over its southern territories, recalling that Guatemala was one of the first Central and South American countries to open a consulate in Dakhla in December 2022.
During a joint press conference with his Guatemalan counterpart following their discussions, Bourita reiterated the robustness of the relationship between Morocco and the Republic of Guatemala, indicating that these relations are grounded in mutual respect and continuous coordination on various international matters.
Bourita expressed his appreciation for Guatemala’s steadfast and supportive stance on the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and its sovereignty over its southern territories, reminding attendees that Guatemala was among the first Central and South American nations to establish a consulate in Dakhla in December 2022.
Furthermore, Bourita noted that both sides agreed on the necessity of holding a political dialogue mechanism periodically and annually, alternating between Morocco and Guatemala, and to give a greater economic dimension to bilateral relations by encouraging businesspeople to engage in this dynamic.
In this context, the minister revealed efforts to organize a Moroccan Economic Week in Guatemala before the end of the year, in addition to preparing a Moroccan Economic Forum in Guatemala next year, in celebration of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
He pointed out that the agreement regarding investment protection between Morocco and Guatemala is still under discussion, with a focus on enhancing cooperation in food security and renewable energy sectors, along with opening a bilateral dialogue on security and migration issues, which are shared challenges that can facilitate the exchange of experiences and the development of new cooperation mechanisms.
Bourita confirmed that the dialogue between the two countries also encompasses regional and international issues, considering Guatemala as an important player in Central America and international organizations.
The Moroccan minister concluded by praising President Bernardo Arévalo de León’s efforts in promoting governance, transparency, and combating corruption, affirming Morocco’s support for these reforms aimed at achieving development, stability, and respect for the rule of law in Guatemala.
