Nizar Baraka, the Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party, sent an official letter to Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the People’s Party in Spain, urging him to clarify the party’s stance on the Moroccan Sahara issue, following his re-election at the party’s congress held from July 4 to 6.

In his correspondence, Baraka expressed his congratulations to his Spanish counterpart but voiced concern over the lack of clarity regarding the People’s Party’s position on Morocco’s autonomy proposal. He described this ambiguity as surprising, especially given the increasing international support for the Moroccan initiative presented in 2007.

The Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party emphasized that this proposal enjoys wide backing from significant international powers, including the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, as well as 22 European countries, and several African, Arab, Asian, and Latin American nations, viewing it as a realistic and reliable framework for resolving the dispute.

Baraka explained that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents a serious option for establishing a lasting solution, enhancing stability in the Maghreb and Sahel regions, and opening broader prospects for cooperation, investment, and development, which would positively affect the reduction of irregular migration by creating job opportunities and local growth.

In closing his letter, Baraka highlighted the deep historical and political relationship between the Istiqlal Party and the People’s Party in Spain, which extends for more than a quarter-century, reaffirming the Moroccan party’s readiness to strengthen dialogue and coordination to serve the mutual interests of both countries.
