Akhannouch Calls for Universal Telecommunications Network and Announces Launch of 5G in Morocco
On Friday, July 25, 2025, in Rabat, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch chaired a board meeting of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency, dedicated to discussing the current situation of the sector and reviewing the agency’s projects and programs for the coming years.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister reminded attendees of Morocco’s digital transformation journey under King Mohammed VI, emphasizing that the telecommunications sector is a fundamental pillar for improving development indicators and reducing digital and geographical disparities.
Akhannouch stressed the need for a comprehensive expansion of the telecommunications network, particularly in mountainous regions, noting that this initiative cannot be postponed. He urged the agency to identify uncovered areas and coordinate with government sectors and the private sector to provide high-quality and fast communication services in these regions.
The meeting resulted in several decisions, most notably conducting a comprehensive survey to identify remote areas lacking telecommunications coverage, with the aim of launching coverage according to a clear program. Additionally, the meeting marked the start of 5G technology to enhance network quality and support economic and social development.
During the meeting, Azzaar Al-Hasibi, the agency’s director general, presented an overview of coverage indicators and access to telecommunications services, revealing that the number of mobile phone subscribers reached 57 million, while the internet sector has about 40 million users, with coverage reaching 90% of the population compared to only 37% across Africa.
Al-Hasibi pointed out that Morocco currently leads African countries according to the Information and Communications Technology Development Index released by the International Telecommunication Union for 2025. He added that the national frequency plan will be updated to align with technological transformations and economic and social needs.
He also revealed that the agency will continue its structural projects related to expanding the fiber optic network and high-speed internet, and will provide 5G technology through investments estimated at 80 billion dirhams. This will enable coverage of several cities with this technology by the end of 2025, with the goal of reaching an 85% coverage rate with 5G technology by 2030.
