Last week, a high-ranking delegation from the “Port Vell” of Barcelona conducted an official visit to the Port of Tangier city, aimed at discussing future cooperation between the two ports and strengthening the relationship between the port and the city.

The Spanish delegation was headed by David Pino, director of “Port Vell,” along with Secretary General Ángeles Rodrigo, Marina Port Vell director Iñaki Aroth, and Carlos Anglada, executive director of the World Trade Center Barcelona, alongside several officials and experts.

Both parties discussed the growing role of open-port areas in stimulating the national economy and contributing to urban development, emphasizing the importance of developing these spaces to transform from commercial ports into vibrant urban centers open to citizens and visitors. They exchanged insights on the common challenges faced in such urban transformations, particularly regarding the balance between economic performance and social and cultural dimensions.

During the meeting with the Spanish delegation, officials from the Port of Tangier city outlined the main features of the strategic development plan for the period 2026-2030, which focuses on enhancing the city’s appeal as an international tourist destination and improving port performance based on the “port-city” model that connects economic infrastructure with urban environment.

For their part, representatives from the Port of Barcelona presented their strategy for the period 2025-2030, aimed at enhancing the port’s role as a multifunctional facility based on innovation and sustainability, contributing to the economic and social development of the Catalonia region. The visit served as an opportunity to deepen discussions on opportunities for joint cooperation and experience exchange in the management and development of urban ports according to modern international standards.
