Morocco Appoints Military Attachés in Several Embassies, Including Pakistan, Argentina, and Ethiopia

Morocco continues to expand its military and defense presence in various international capitals, following the approval by the Council of Ministers, chaired by King Mohammed VI, of a decree to appoint military attachés and their assistants in several Moroccan embassies, as announced in the latest issue of the Official Gazette.

These new appointments include Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, Argentina, and Pakistan, reflecting the Kingdom’s growing engagement in international military cooperation networks and solidifying its presence in global strategic decision-making circles.

The decision comes after the ministerial council, which convened on May 12, approved a decree that organizes the legal status of military attachés and their assistants and defines their roles within Moroccan diplomatic missions abroad.

The focus on three African states aligns with Morocco’s approach to deepening strategic partnerships south of the Sahara, both in terms of security coordination and the exchange of expertise and military training. This direction is clearly evident in the increasing openness towards pivotal countries on the continent, such as Ethiopia and Kenya, in a context marked by rising cross-border challenges.

In Asia, Rabat seeks to broaden its cooperation horizons with Islamabad, where negotiations are underway for a military agreement that includes the transfer of Pakistani arms manufacturing technology to Morocco, potentially marking a turning point in the development of national defense industries.

In South America, the appointment of a military attaché in the Moroccan embassy in Argentina reflects Rabat’s desire to build defense partnerships with emerging regional powers and benefit from diverse and complementary military experiences.

These new appointments form part of a gradual policy that Rabat has been pursuing for years to enhance its diplomatic military presence, with notable features including the appointment of military attachés in India and Turkey in 2022, as part of redefining the Kingdom’s strategic influence on the international stage.
