Launch of a New National Strategy to Boost Moroccan Traditional Industry Exports

A new national strategy has been launched to enhance exports of Moroccan handicrafts.

Hassan Saadi, the Secretary of State for Handicrafts, announced this initiative as part of a comprehensive vision led by the government to develop the social and solidarity economy and open new markets for Moroccan products on the global stage.

Saadi clarified that the formulation of this strategy was carried out under the supervision of the State Secretariat for Foreign Trade, with its decrees signed in the past two weeks in the presence of the Prime Minister and various ministerial sectors, a move that underscores the state’s commitment to this vital sector.

During a session at the House of Councillors, Saadi revealed that exports of handicrafts reached a turnover of 1.11 billion dirhams in 2024, noting that this figure, despite its significance, fails to reflect the true potential available.

He indicated that pottery ranks first among exported products at 36%, followed by floral art at 20%, and traditional clothing at 13%. The United States topped the list of importers at 44%, followed by France at 14% and Spain at 7%.

The government has allocated a budget of 800 million dirhams to support exporters in the handicraft sector through agreements aimed at digitizing and simplifying export procedures.

Saadi marked a significant precedent by enabling any company or cooperative in the handicrafts sector achieving a turnover exceeding one million dirhams to benefit from export support programs.

He presented encouraging results from programs implemented by the Dar Siani Foundation, where over 100 stakeholders in the sector benefited last year from exporter support programs, collective support, and the excellence program.

Saadi announced the launch of the second round of these programs next Friday to support new exporters in gaining access to non-traditional markets and enhancing their presence at international forums and exhibitions in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He emphasized that this strategy represents a national challenge to strengthen Morocco’s position in global markets, expressing confidence in the sector’s stakeholders’ ability to meet competitive challenges and explore promising avenues for export.
