Increase in the Number of Baccalaureate Graduates within Moroccan Prisons
In Morocco, prisoners celebrated a new educational achievement that reinforces the role of correctional institutions as centers for rehabilitation and reintegration, following encouraging results from the regular session of the baccalaureate exams (May 2025 session), which showcased the academic success of inmates.
The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration announced, based on data from the Ministry of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research, that the number of free candidates among female and male prisoners in this session reached 2,018, reflecting a notable increase of 35.16% compared to the previous year. The attendance rate in the exams was about 90%, with 435 inmates successfully passing, resulting in an overall success rate of 23%.
Positive indicators did not stop there, as statistics revealed that 887 inmates will take the make-up exams, representing 47% of the candidates, reflecting ongoing opportunities for success for a broad segment of them.
In a gesture highlighting the excellence of some inmates, the delegation recorded that 131 candidates received grades ranging from “Satisfactory” to “Very Good,” accounting for 30% of the total successful candidates, an increase of 11% compared to the 2024 session.
The General Delegation commended these commendable results, which reflect the seriousness of both female and male prisoners in pursuing their studies despite the conditions of detention, urging them to continue their efforts and perseverance to achieve further academic success and make a significant contribution to their reintegration into society.
These figures serve as evidence of the importance of education as a lever for reform within correctional institutions and highlight the success of the rehabilitative approach adopted by the delegation in enabling inmates to invest their time in imprisonment for self-development and envisioning a better future.
