Food Security: Morocco Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting Developing Countries
Abdullah Laghmid, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to UN Organizations in Rome, confirmed that Morocco is fully committed to supporting small island developing states, least developed countries, and landlocked developing countries through effective and tangible South-South cooperation. This statement was made during his speech on Sunday at the 44th General Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the Italian capital, Rome.
Laghmid emphasized that the Kingdom shares its expertise with partners in vital areas such as sustainable agriculture, fisheries, irrigation management, renewable energies, vocational training, and food system transformation, aligning with the needs of these countries, especially in Africa. He highlighted Morocco’s commitment through several strategic initiatives that reflect the Royal vision of solidarity and proactivity, foremost among them the establishment of the three climate committees for the Congo Basin, the Sahel region, and island countries, launched in Marrakech during the COP22 conference in 2016.
He also shed light on the Atlantic Royal Initiative that reinforces the continental dimension of Moroccan cooperation through major projects aimed at linking the Sahel region with a modern Atlantic highway, contributing to achieving sustainable development goals. He noted that these initiatives enhance Morocco’s future position within the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The Moroccan official called for empowering these countries with technology, financing, and market access, while strengthening their productive capacities and improving their resilience to climate change. He stressed the importance of placing food security at the heart of development programs for these nations, arguing that the Moroccan model of cooperation exemplifies solidarity and offers practical solutions that align with the priorities of its partners.
