Niger’s President Prioritizes Gas Pipeline to Morocco and Promises to Remove Obstacles
President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has reiterated his full support for the gas pipeline project to Morocco, deeming it a national priority that needs to be expedited. This was revealed by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim during his participation in the executive session of the African Parliamentary Union, which took place in Casablanca from May 21 to 23.
Senator Ibrahim, representing Abuja, conveyed assurances from the Nigerian president regarding the government’s commitment to review stalled projects, with the gas pipeline to Morocco at the forefront, aiming to ensure their swift completion.
The project aims to transport 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually over a distance of 5,660 kilometers, traversing 13 African countries, starting from Nigeria and reaching Morocco before heading to Europe.
Senator Ibrahim spoke about the economic benefits the project would bring, particularly in terms of employment and regional development, emphasizing that thousands of jobs would be created as a result of this pipeline, while also facilitating industrial and energy integration in West and North Africa.
He added that Morocco would strengthen its position as a strategic hub for gas exports to Europe, granting it a more significant role in ensuring energy security in the region.
The Nigerian parliamentarian confirmed that the project is currently in the planning and feasibility study phase, explaining that a final investment decision has not yet been made, which reflects the strategic and technical sensitivity of the project. He also revealed that the Nigerian parliament is working on amending certain laws to avoid any legislative obstacles that could hinder its implementation.
