The Moroccan Ministry of Digital Transition Launches a New Directorate for Artificial Intelligence and Organizes a National Conference to Enhance Digitization
Amal Al-Fallahi Al-Sghrishni, the Minister of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, announced the establishment of a new directorate specializing in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies within the ministry. She noted the ministry’s readiness to organize a national conference next July to expand the discussion on the applications of artificial intelligence in public administration.
The minister explained in response to questions from parliamentary advisors that artificial intelligence is a fundamental part of the National Digitization Strategy 2030, aimed at enhancing its use in developing public services and in both the public and private sectors, to keep pace with digital transformation and stimulate the digital economy.
She reported that the Ministry of Digital Transition has launched five key initiatives in this context, including the establishment of the specialized directorate for artificial intelligence and modern technologies, which aims to set public policies related to national data and artificial intelligence.
Al-Sghrishni confirmed that the ministry plans to hold a national conference on July 1 and 2 to broaden dialogue and coordination with various stakeholders in the field of digital transformation and artificial intelligence investment. She highlighted that artificial intelligence is of particular interest in digital transformation projects due to its significant potential in optimizing production costs and providing solutions that meet citizens’ needs.
The minister clarified that Morocco was among the first countries to adopt UNESCO’s recommendation on the ethics of artificial intelligence in 2022 and continues its commitment to developing responsible and human-centered artificial intelligence by participating in global, African, and Arab initiatives.
She added that the ministry is working on developing the necessary executive programs, including legislative and regulatory frameworks and ethical standards, to enhance innovation, international cooperation, and scientific research, ensuring the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Al-Sghrishni also revealed a second initiative that includes signing a declaration of intent to establish an Arab-African regional digital hub focused on artificial intelligence and data science, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, aimed at coordinating the development of digitization and artificial intelligence at the Arab and African levels.
Regarding the third initiative, the minister mentioned the establishment of a network of centers of excellence aimed at developing digital solutions powered by artificial intelligence, which will link scientific research with local innovation across the 12 regions. She indicated that a memorandum of understanding has been signed to establish the first center of excellence in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, which will contribute to turning scientific research outcomes into practical solutions for private sector investment.
