Mohammed Ould Errechid: The Proactive Vision Has Yielded Significant Gains to Support the Moroccan Sahara
The President of the House of Councillors, Mohammed Ould Errechid, confirmed that Morocco’s diplomatic approach to the Sahara issue has shifted towards a strategy of initiative and proactivity, highlighting the Council’s role in supporting this matter.
In a speech during the national seminar organized under the slogan: “The Moroccan Parliament and the Sahara Issue: Towards Effective Parallel Diplomacy and Institutional Advocacy,” on Monday morning, Ould Errechid stated that “the Moroccan diplomatic approach has, in recent years, evolved into one of initiative and foresight, based on a solid historical legitimacy, strong legal arguments, and ambitious development projects.”
He emphasized that “this approach has led to significant gains, the most notable of which is the increasing support for the autonomy initiative, which has gained broad international recognition as the only solution to end the fabricated conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, as confirmed by key partners including the United States, Spain, France, and several African and Arab brotherly and friendly countries.”
Throughout the advocacy journey, the speaker added, “the developmental aspect emerges as one of the key features of the Moroccan vision in consolidating the Moroccan Sahara, as the southern regions of the Kingdom are witnessing qualitative transformations due to the royal developmental projects they host, in addition to initiatives with African outreach, such as the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project and other Atlantic initiatives.”
In this context, he continued: “These are not just infrastructure projects; they are strategic elements for reshaping the geopolitical roles of the Kingdom, by making the Moroccan Sahara a space for stability and growth, and a platform connecting North and South Africa, which enhances regional integration and consolidates Morocco’s leadership in its environment.”
The President of the House of Councillors stressed that “parliamentary diplomacy is of multiplied importance, as it serves as a key partner in highlighting this dynamic at the international level, showcasing the effectiveness of the Moroccan developmental model in its southern regions, and defending its strategic dimensions, which bolster the image of the Kingdom as a reliable actor in its regional and continental surroundings.”
