Morocco Grants First License to Energy Service Company (ESCO)

Ousar Ahmed/

The Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development has issued the first official license to an Energy Service Company (ESCO) in Morocco, as part of the implementation of Decree No. 2-24-153 related to the application of Law No. 47.09 on energy efficiency, published in the Official Gazette last November.

In a statement, the ministry confirmed that this license represents a pivotal step in establishing the new regulatory framework for energy efficiency, complementing the process of accrediting mandatory energy auditing bodies, which has so far resulted in 25 accreditations.

The same source added that the new generation of energy service companies will expedite the energy transition through the activation of energy performance contracts, which serve as contractual mechanisms between companies and beneficiaries aimed at improving energy efficiency in exchange for tangible results.

According to the ministry, energy efficiency is one of the most promising areas for job creation, given the variety of related specializations, ranging from maintenance to smart energy management technologies in buildings.

This regulatory framework aims to enhance the national business ecosystem in the field of energy efficiency and to provide a conducive environment for skill development and the creation of new job opportunities.

The ministry reiterated its readiness to support companies wishing to enter this sector, urging economic players to take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen their energy performance and reduce costs.
