Researchers from Seoul National University in South Korea have discovered that warming the feet helps speed up the process of falling asleep, reduces the number of nighttime awakenings, and improves overall sleep quality.
According to “Russia Today,” scientists found that warming the feet not only facilitates quicker sleep onset but also decreases the likelihood of waking up during the night. This is attributed to enhanced temperature regulation, allowing the body to conserve energy and sleep more peacefully.
Doctors note that cold feet may result from lowered body temperature, tight footwear, or hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women. Additionally, iron deficiency anemia is often a contributing factor, as decreased hemoglobin levels lead to reduced oxygen supply to the tissues.
Of greater concern is the potential for arteriosclerosis—a vascular disease where arteries narrow or become blocked by plaques. In advanced cases, this condition can lead to severe complications, including amputation.
Doctors recommend that individuals who frequently experience cold feet should undergo an ultrasound examination of the blood vessels in the lower extremities to rule out serious complications.
Researchers suggest that all one might need for a better night’s sleep is a pair of soft and comfortable socks, but if symptoms persist, consulting a doctor to identify the underlying cause is essential.
