The Spanish newspaper “The Objective” confirmed that Morocco is on its way to becoming a “hub for renewable energy” thanks to its flourishing production capabilities in solar, wind, and hydropower.

To highlight the development of the renewable energy sector in Morocco, the Spanish media referenced the massive Xlinks project, which aims to supply the United Kingdom with electricity from renewable sources through a 3,800-kilometer subsea HVDC line, with a budget estimated at around 20 billion euros.

The newspaper explained that this new power plant relies entirely on solar and wind energy, along with a battery storage system.

The same source indicated that this project, located in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, rich in renewable energy resources, is considered “unique,” as it will contribute to producing 11.5 gigawatts of carbon-free electricity based on solar and wind energy, providing 3.6 gigawatts of reliable energy, averaging over 19 hours daily.

The Spanish newspaper noted that there are other giant projects Morocco will undertake with billions of euros to solidify its position as a key energy exporting hub, including the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, which will connect the kingdom to Nigeria via 13 countries before reaching Europe.

“The Objective” adds that this project, requiring funding of 25 billion dollars, is crucial for Morocco, which is also heavily investing in green hydrogen as a key lever for its energy transition.

The newspaper concluded by reminding that Morocco had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking a new step toward realizing this colossal project.
