Expert Offers Advice for Those Wanting to Run in Their Elderly Years

Running in old age has numerous health benefits, but there are some precautions to consider in order to avoid potential health risks.

Professor Daniel Kindov explained that running in old age helps maintain fitness and enhances mobility, while also having a positive effect on cardiovascular health.

The German orthopedic surgeon added that running must be done correctly to avoid potential health risks, such as muscle strain, heel pain, or joint problems, particularly in the back, hips, and knees.

To reap the health benefits of running in old age while avoiding potential risks, one must consider the following five rules:

– Regular check-ups: Periodic examinations should be conducted in case of chronic illnesses like heart problems or arthritis, and one should consult their treating physician.

– Gradual effort: It is important to start with short distances and take breaks when feeling fatigued.

– Appropriate shoes: Proper running shoes should be worn to protect the joints, so shoes with shock-absorbing systems are recommended.

– Suitable running surface: A suitable running path should be chosen; smooth surfaces are better for joint health. In summer, it’s best to run early in the morning or in the evening to avoid stressing the circulatory system during hot days.

– Warm-up and stretching: It’s advisable to warm up gently before running, and remember to do stretching exercises after training.
