Princess Lalla Hasna inaugurates a digital exhibition celebrating “Rabat Carpets” in Baku
Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasna, President of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Foundation of Rabat, presided over the opening of the digital exhibition “Rabat Carpets: A Tapestry of Arts” today, Tuesday, in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku. The event took place at the National Carpet Museum, in the presence of Mrs. Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and Ms. Arzu Aliyeva, Director of the Media Center in Baku.
This exhibition, achieved in partnership between Moroccan and Azerbaijani institutions, including the Dar Essana’a Foundation and the National Museum Foundation, commemorates the Rabat carpet as a prominent symbol of traditional women’s craftsmanship in Morocco, through an innovative display that blends digital techniques with physical exhibition.
The exhibition highlights the origins and intricate manufacturing techniques of Rabat carpets, emphasizing the pivotal role of women in preserving this cultural heritage, supported by images, infographics, and scientific texts that contribute to the transmission of this ancient art to future generations.
During the official visit, Princess Lalla Hasna was welcomed by several dignitaries from Morocco and Azerbaijan, including ministers, ambassadors, and cultural institution officials. The museum director delivered a speech expressing her pride in hosting this distinguished exhibition, which connects the heritage of both countries and reflects the cultural intersections between them in the art of carpet-making.
The cultural event featured musical and artistic performances, including an animated film and a musical piece that expresses the symbolism of carpets in Azerbaijani culture, alongside demonstrations about the history of Rabat carpets and their handmade production methods. Attention was also drawn to Azerbaijani carpet weavers and their role in preserving local heritage.
The ceremony also saw the presentation of five new types of carpets developed as part of the “Reviving the Art of Azerbaijani Carpet Weaving: Authenticity and Innovation” project, before Her Royal Highness officiated, according to local traditions, the cutting of a new carpet, formally launching it.
The visit concluded with Princess Lalla Hasna signing the golden register at the National Carpet Museum in Baku, marking a significant cultural moment that reflects Morocco’s commitment to transmitting its intangible heritage through innovation and international cultural cooperation.
