Morocco and Mauritania Strengthen Cooperation in Decentralization and Territorial Governance

The Moroccan Minister of Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, welcomed today in Rabat the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Interior for Decentralization and Local Development of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Yakoub Ould Saleh Fall. He is visiting Morocco at the head of a high-level delegation from May 4 to 8. This visit is part of strengthening cooperative relations between the two countries, in line with the royal directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

During their meeting, the two sides discussed ways to broaden the horizons of cooperation between Morocco and Mauritania in the fields of advanced regionalization and decentralization, emphasizing the importance of enhancing decentralized cooperation as a cornerstone for improving territorial governance and regional development. Both parties stressed the need to establish effective partnerships between local authorities in both countries and to exchange experiences on waste management, local services, urban planning, and digital transformation.

The meeting also reviewed Morocco’s experience in decentralization, focusing on the results of decentralized cooperation between the two countries, which has seen significant progress through joint field projects between local authorities, paving the way for a model strategic partnership.
