Arsenal dethrones Real Madrid from the Champions League throne
Arsenal has secured a spot in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after defeating the defending champion Real Madrid 2-1 in the return leg of the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
The Gunners capitalized on their historic 3-0 victory in the first leg against Real Madrid last week, advancing with an aggregate score of 5-1.
Arsenal opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium with a goal from their star Bukayo Saka in the 65th minute, benefiting from a perfect pass from teammate Mikel Merino.
However, Vinícius Júnior equalized for the royal team just a minute later, taking advantage of a significant error by the visitors’ defender William Saliba.
In the closing seconds of the match, Merino assisted Arsenal’s second goal with a brilliant pass to his teammate Gabriel Martinelli, who easily found the net against Thibaut Courtois.
All of Real Madrid’s attempts to equalize failed, leading them to exit the tournament in which they hold the record for most wins.
Arsenal is set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
