The United Nations Security Council postponed the vote that was scheduled for Friday on a draft resolution proposed by Bahrain, which would permit the use of “defensive” force to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

Iran has effectively closed this vital route for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. On Friday, Tehran warned the Security Council against any “provocative actions.”

The 15-member council was expected to vote on the draft resolution Friday morning, but the timeline changed late Thursday.

The reason given was that the United Nations observes Good Friday, coinciding with the holiday, as an official holiday, according to diplomatic sources, despite this being known when the voting date was announced.
