The second international summit on nuclear energy kicked off today, Tuesday, in Paris, initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron, in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The summit is attended by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, representing His Majesty King Mohammed VI at this high-level international event.

The Moroccan delegation includes Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad; Said Malin, Director of the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security; and Samira Sitaile, the King’s Ambassador to Paris.

This summit, following the first round held in Brussels in March 2024, brings together numerous heads of state, government officials, international organization leaders, financial institutions, alongside industrial stakeholders and experts. The aim is to exchange views on the role of civilian nuclear energy in addressing global energy and climate challenges.

The summit takes place against a backdrop of increasing global electricity demand and accelerating decarbonization strategies. It seeks to establish itself as a political framework for the development of civilian nuclear energy, complementing the technical bodies under the International Atomic Energy Agency, ahead of several significant international events scheduled for 2026, including the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

Organizers believe that the summit serves as an occasion to reaffirm the importance of nuclear energy in ensuring energy security, supporting the transition to low-carbon electricity production, and enhancing industrial development.

In addition to political and technical discussions, the summit aims to encourage the launch of concrete initiatives and partnerships among countries, international organizations, financial institutions, and industrial stakeholders, contributing to the development of safe, sustainable civilian nuclear energy that aligns with global climate goals.
