A U.S. jury has made a “historic” ruling, holding Meta and YouTube responsible for damages related to digital addiction, mandating that they pay financial compensation to users harmed by their platforms.
The court in Los Angeles determined that the design of digital platforms, including features like infinite scrolling and autoplay, directly contributed to the development of addictive behaviors among users, particularly minors, without offering adequate warnings about potential risks.
The judgment resulted in financial compensations totaling around $6 million, split between the two companies, with Meta bearing most of the responsibility compared to YouTube.
This is the first case of its kind to successfully establish the liability of tech companies for “designing addictive digital products,” potentially setting a legal precedent that could open the floodgates for thousands of similar lawsuits, given that over two thousand cases are currently pending against tech giants.
These rulings come amid a growing debate regarding the impact of social media on mental health, particularly among children and teenagers. Prosecutors argued that the companies were aware of the risks posed by their products but continued to develop tools to increase usage time and enhance engagement.
In response, both companies denied the accusations, asserting their intent to appeal the ruling, claiming that the evidence does not conclusively link platform use to the alleged mental health issues.
Observers believe this court decision could represent a turning point in the relationship between tech companies and users, resurfacing the debate around regulating digital platforms, reminiscent of the experiences with tobacco companies in the 1990s, with the possibility of stricter design restrictions on these services in the future.
