Tamlalt to Host the Ninth Edition of Its Spring Festival and Revive the Glory of Traditional Horsemanship
Anwar Bouchemmam
The city of Tamlalt, which is the southern gateway to the province of Kelaat Sraghna and the first municipality encountered by visitors coming from Marrakech via National Route 8, is preparing to host a new edition of the Tamlalt Spring Festival of Traditional Horsemanship for its ninth installment from April 9 to 12. This event is highly anticipated by traditional horsemanship enthusiasts and the local community after a prolonged hiatus of several years.
This cultural occasion is expected to breathe life back into the city’s spaces, as horsemen from various regions gather to present performances that reflect the rich traditions of Moroccan horsemanship. These displays provide an opportunity to showcase the skill and synergy of the horsemen with their horses during the moment of “gunpowder firing,” which captivates the audience and embodies the symbolism of this art form deeply rooted in the collective memory of the kingdom.
The organization of this event carries more than just a celebratory dimension; the city aims to enhance its cultural heritage and highlight its status as a historical and developing hub. In recent years, Tamlalt has witnessed continuous urban and developmental transformations, gradually positioning itself as an emerging tourist destination within the region, benefiting from its geographical location that makes it a transit point between Marrakech and vast areas of the Marrakech-Safi region.
Moreover, the festival’s activities will not be limited to horsemanship shows, as a diverse program will accompany them, allowing local artisans to display their traditional crafts, alongside spaces dedicated to showcasing local cuisine that reflects the identity and food traditions of the area. The event will also include artistic and entertainment segments, as well as activities aimed at children, making the festival a family-friendly gathering that combines enjoyment with the promotion of local culture.
Organizers hope that this event will contribute to revitalizing the economic cycle in the city by attracting visitors from various regions, providing traders and artisans with an opportunity to showcase their products and stimulating commercial activity during the festival days.
Local stakeholders aspire for this occasion to mark the beginning of a regular return of the festival in the coming years, establishing it as an annual fixture to celebrate the art of “tbourida” and horsemanship heritage while simultaneously showcasing the cultural and touristic assets that Tamlalt has to offer.
Amidst the neighing of horses and the roar of gunpowder, Tamlalt is ready to write a new chapter in its heritage story, as a renewed city strives to reconcile the authenticity of the past with the aspirations of the future.
