South Africa Coach: Morocco’s Victory in “CAN 2025” is a Clear Legal Decision Despite Its Harshness on Senegal

South Africa’s national team coach, Hugo Broos, reacted to the controversy following the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, affirming that awarding the title to the Moroccan team is based on explicit application of the regulations, leaving no room for interpretation from a legal standpoint.

Broos explained in media remarks that exiting the field during an official match is categorized, according to the governing laws, as a case of withdrawal, which results in the concerned team losing by a forfeit score. He added that this fact explains the decision made by the Appeal Committee of the Confederation of African Football, which ruled in favor of the “Atlas Lions.”

While affirming the legality of the decision, the Belgian coach expressed sympathy for the Senegalese team, considering the referee’s ruling difficult, especially after the players had experienced the celebratory atmosphere for weeks before the final decision was issued, which intensified the shock within the team.

Moreover, Broos raised the issue of the delay in reaching a final decision, questioning the reasons behind the prolonged handling of the case despite the clarity of the legal texts governing the situation.

The FIFA had reinforced this stance by updating its official records and recognizing Morocco’s victory by a score of three goals to none, in line with the Appeal Committee’s decision, thereby granting Morocco’s continental title final international recognition.
