Slight Increase in Electricity Production in Morocco at the Beginning of 2026 Driven by Renewable Energies
The Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts, part of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, reported a slight increase in electricity production in Morocco of 0.8% in January 2026, compared to a strong growth of 6.7% during the same period last year.
The report indicated that this performance is primarily attributed to the recovery of renewable energies under Law 13.09, where production increased by 11.8%, along with a 1.7% rise in the production of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water, in addition to a remarkable contribution from national third parties whose production surged by 111.9%.
Conversely, private production decreased by 0.9%, following a significant increase of 9.6% a year earlier, reflecting a relative slowdown in the contribution of this sector.
In terms of external exchanges, electricity imports saw a significant rise of 78% by the end of January 2026, compared to an increase of 14.4% last year, while exports dropped by 15%, following a larger decline of 43.6% during the same period last year.
Overall, net electricity production recorded an increase of 4.9%, compared to a growth of 7% a year earlier, reflecting a relative balance in the market despite pressures related to increased demand and fluctuations in external exchanges.
