Morocco Leads Africa in Production and Export of Consumer Goods
Morocco has topped the list of African countries in the production and export of consumer goods aimed at foreign markets, according to a recent ranking released by The African Exponent, a platform specialized in financial analysis and rankings within the continent. The platform highlighted the rapid transformation of the kingdom into a prominent industrial and export powerhouse, particularly in the consumer goods sector.
The platform noted that Morocco has successfully built strong industrial clusters over the past decade, encompassing sectors such as automotive, electronics, textiles, and food processing. It emphasized that the automotive industry has become a key driver of exports, thanks to large industrial areas hosting global manufacturing companies and suppliers.
Furthermore, the source indicated that the textile and clothing sector continues to maintain its robust competitiveness, supplying numerous European brands with products characterized by quick production and quality. Meanwhile, Morocco continues to export processed food and packaged products, benefiting from its agricultural resources and increasing investments in food industries.
The report confirmed that Morocco’s geographical location and its trade agreements with the European Union and several global markets provide it with a strategic position that facilitates the export of consumer goods, acting as a gateway between Africa and Europe.
South Africa ranked second in the continental classification, followed by Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ethiopia, while Egypt secured a prominent position due to the strength of its industrial sector, which includes electronics, home appliances, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and processed foods, bolstered by government initiatives such as the “Egypt Makes Electronics” program, attracting global companies to establish local production lines for export.
The list also included Tunisia, Ghana, and Kenya, which have benefited from growth in their exports in processed food, beverages, textiles, and light industrial products, amid government efforts to improve access to international markets through trade agreements and tariff exemptions.
The report pointed out that the manufacturing sector in Africa is experiencing a rapid transformation that is reshaping the export structure, as countries in the continent gradually shift towards reducing reliance on raw material exports in favor of value-added manufactured consumer goods.
The platform concluded that this transformation reflects the aspirations of African nations to create sustainable job opportunities and enhance foreign exchange earnings, especially with the growth of intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area and increasing interest from global investors in manufacturing industries within the continent.
