Moroccan Avocado Faces Struggles in International Markets: Sharp Decline in Exports During a Challenging Season

Moroccan avocado exports saw a significant decline during the 2025/2026 season, with quantities shipped falling to just 58,000 tons compared to over 100,000 tons in the previous season. This drop reflects the substantial challenges faced by this vital sector. The Moroccan Avocado Association described the season as “exceptional yet difficult,” highlighting the unprecedented conditions that marked various stages of the harvesting process.

The decline is primarily attributed to severe weather conditions that directly impacted production, with high heat waves leading to losses estimated at around half of the expected quantities. These factors also contributed to reduced supply, while prices remained high throughout the season, complicating marketing efforts and causing tensions between producers and exporters.

On the international markets, Moroccan exporters faced strong competition, particularly in Europe, where there was an abundance of offerings from other countries, putting additional pressure on local products. In light of the situation, some stakeholders were forced to temporarily halt harvesting operations to avoid further losses, reflecting the fragile balance between supply and demand in this sector.

The end of the season was not without further difficulties, as the Loukkos and Gharb regions experienced new weather disruptions, including floods and strong winds, resulting in additional losses and affecting product quality. Logistics challenges, such as the closure of some ports and delays in transportation, further complicated the scenario. Despite this difficult context, industry professionals are hopeful for improved conditions in the upcoming seasons and a recovery in Moroccan export dynamics.
