The Eden Club cinema in Casablanca hosted a distinguished cultural Ramadan evening, featuring the Moroccan film “Bitter Algae,” directed by Idriss Achouika. This artistic and intellectual gathering combined creativity with meaningful societal discussion. The event was organized in partnership with the Coordinating Forum for Gender Equity and the newspaper Al-Bayan, as part of a cultural initiative aimed at raising awareness of women’s issues and equality within Moroccan society.
The film, categorized as social drama, boldly addresses a series of sensitive societal issues, primarily focusing on the topic of inheritance equality, which generates ongoing legal, theological, and social debates. It also highlights the violence that women face in various forms, whether physical, psychological, or symbolic. Additionally, it sheds light on gender discrimination, portrayed through characters that reflect the contradictions within society between conservatism and modernization, as well as between social customs and demands for justice and equality.
The cinematic work relies on a dramatic narrative that intertwines human elements with critical themes, where the fates of the characters intersect within a social context that mirrors the transformations of Moroccan society. It raises profound questions about the status of women within the family and public spaces. Furthermore, the film illustrates how culture and art can serve as tools for awareness and sensibility, moving away from direct discourse or slogans.
The evening provided an opportunity for discussion and exchange of views among the attendees regarding the issues raised by the film, especially in light of the legal and social transformations occurring in Morocco, and the ongoing public debate surrounding the Family Code and women’s rights. This initiative is part of a series of awareness-raising activities launched by the Forum for Gender Equity, coinciding with the approach of March 8, International Women’s Rights Day, aiming to promote a culture of equality and embed values of justice and fairness through cultural, artistic, and intellectual activities.
This cultural event reaffirms the vital role that cinematic and cultural spaces play in nurturing societal discourse and the importance of the seventh art as a means of expressing community concerns and addressing contemporary issues, with the goal of building a more equitable and equal society.
