The Ministry of Justice announces the establishment of a National Agency for the Management of Seized Assets

In an ongoing session at the House of Councillors on Tuesday, Justice Minister Abdellatif Wahbi revealed that the ministry is working on creating a national agency that will manage and sell seized assets, whether they are placed at the judiciary’s disposal or confiscated by other entities. This initiative is part of strategic reforms aimed at improving the management of these assets.

The minister explained that Morocco currently lacks an organized institutional mechanism for managing seized assets, unlike many countries that have financially and socially benefited from similar bodies. He confirmed that the preparation of the agency’s project has been underway for nearly two years in coordination with the Ministry of Finance and several relevant sectors.

Wahbi pointed out that the absence of this agency leads to assets remaining in court storage facilities and local authority maintenance, unused and susceptible to degradation. The anticipated agency will be responsible for selling these assets or allocating them to public institutions in a manner that serves the public interest.

In a related context, the minister discussed the draft law regarding the regulation of the legal profession, noting that the existing disagreement is natural and is part of a legislative process that affects a legal and institutional status that has been established for decades. Wahbi emphasized that dialogue with the relevant parties remains open, provided it starts from the logic of the state and its institutions, expressing his readiness for responsible and public dialogue on the issues at hand, while reminding that the project is currently in the hands of the legislative body for deliberation.
