Morocco is emerging as the frontrunner to host the Club World Cup in 2029, following a European push to support the expansion of the tournament.

The British newspaper The Guardian reported that UEFA is closer to adopting FIFA’s proposal to raise the number of participating clubs in the Club World Cup to 48 teams, starting from the 2029 edition.

The shift in UEFA’s stance comes after previous reservations expressed by its officials, fearing that any expansion might disrupt the balance of its continental competitions, particularly the Champions League. However, recent discussions have shown more flexibility towards the 48-team format, while the idea of hosting the tournament every two years has been dismissed.

In this context, Morocco stands out as one of the top candidates to host the expanded edition, alongside Spain, thanks to the organizational momentum the kingdom has built over recent years in sports infrastructure and major event management. The potential 2029 edition is seen as an important test run ahead of the more significant 2030 event, when Morocco plans to co-host the World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
