Surge in Chinese Car Sales Expected by 2025

The British newspaper “The Guardian” reported yesterday that Chinese car manufacturers are set to account for nearly one-tenth of new car sales in the United Kingdom by 2025, a significant increase from a much smaller share last year.

According to Matthias Schmidt, a specialist in European electric vehicles, companies like MG, BYD, and Chery are expected to surpass 200,000 new cars sold in the British market in 2025, enabling them to capture around 10% of the market share.

This trend is part of a broader movement observed in Western Europe; Spain and Norway are also witnessing market shares close to 10% for Chinese manufacturers in new car sales, while the average in Western Europe remains about 6%, as noted by Schmidt.

The analyst attributes this ongoing progress at the European level primarily to China’s significant advancements in the global electric vehicle industry, which has strengthened the competitiveness of its manufacturers in European markets.

In the UK, Japanese car manufacturers have been among the notable losers in terms of market share; both Nissan and Toyota, despite their industrial presence in the country, lost nearly one percentage point of their market share over the past year. Honda and Suzuki also saw declines in sales, while Mitsubishi has completely withdrawn from the British market.

On another note, the analysis indicates that around 40% of the models launched by Chinese manufacturers in Western Europe during the third quarter of 2025 will be fully electric vehicles powered by batteries, reflecting an increasing diversity in their product offering.
