Nador West Mediterranean Port Attracts Major Industrial Investments and Establishes an Advanced Industrial and Logistics Hub in Morocco

The Nador West Mediterranean Port has begun attracting significant industrial investments that could reshape the economic landscape of the Oriental region and reinforce Morocco’s position as an industrial and logistics hub in the Mediterranean basin.

At the forefront of these investments, the French group Renault has commenced the search for a site to establish an advanced electric vehicle manufacturing plant near the port, a move that experts see as a qualitative shift towards clean and technologically advanced manufacturing.

The website Africa Intelligence reported that Renault’s establishment in the Nador region represents a strategic lever for developing the automotive industry in Morocco by focusing on modern technology and sustainability, as well as enhancing innovation in local production and supply chains, which opens the door for a comprehensive industrial ecosystem with high added value.

This project is expected to create thousands of job opportunities for local residents and provide new skills in technology and modern industry, offering the Oriental region a tangible economic and social boost and enhancing its investment attractiveness.

Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, confirmed that the Nador West Mediterranean Port will be operational in the second half of 2026, with the Atlantic Port of Dakhla expected to open in 2028.

Aziz Yahya, coordinator for studies and works on the project, explained that the infrastructure for the first phase is complete, while the operational equipment is currently being manufactured under the supervision of Marsa Maroc and other partners. He added that the project is designed with a long-term vision and relies on three complementary phases, noting that increasing demand for the port has expedited the expansion works for the western quay, which were initially planned over five years.

The port’s operation will coincide with the launch of the first phase of the industrial and logistics zone, covering 800 hectares, including 270 hectares dedicated to green industries, creating a comprehensive system that integrates port and industrial activities.

In a sign of the readiness of the industrial infrastructure in the area, Chinese company Aleeon, specializing in renewable energy components, has launched its first shipment of wind turbine blades to the European market from its factory in the municipality of Amjaou in the Driouch region through the Nador Port, after receiving a license from the Ministry of Equipment and Water to export its products.

The Nador West Mediterranean Port stands as a direct competitor to the Spanish Port of Algeciras, within a national vision to develop port infrastructure and enhance the competitiveness of the national economy. The port includes a liquefied natural gas terminal and areas for future industrial expansion up to 5,000 hectares, with an annual capacity ranging between 3.5 and 5.5 million containers, placing it in a competitive position despite the continued dominance of the Tangier Mediterranean Port in terms of trade volume.

The project is linked to a broad program to strengthen road and logistics connectivity, which includes the construction of a new highway and the upgrading of strategic routes towards Fes and Meknes, aimed at reducing travel time and improving economic appeal. The project enjoys European financial support exceeding 300 million euros, reflecting international partners’ confidence in Morocco’s ability to implement structured projects with Mediterranean and continental scope, and solidifying the port’s position as a strategic gateway to European, African, and American markets.
