Paris Reaffirms Support for Moroccan Sovereignty Over the Sahara… Senate President Confirms Consistent State Position

French Senate President Gérard Larcher has stated that his country’s stance on Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara is part of a well-established state policy, not merely a temporary or politically motivated position. He emphasized that France’s support for Morocco’s claim to its southern territories is a firm institutional choice.

In a press statement following his discussions with Moroccan officials, Larcher explained that Paris’ backing of Morocco’s autonomy initiative is the only serious and realistic solution to resolve the regional dispute, highlighting that this approach enjoys consensus within the institutions of the French Republic.

The French official added that France views the Moroccan Sahara issue as an integral part of the Kingdom’s national sovereignty, affirming that this position reflects a long-term strategic vision focused on regional stability and enhancing partnership with Morocco.

Larcher noted that French-Moroccan relations are experiencing renewed momentum, indicating that bilateral cooperation encompasses multiple political, economic, and security domains, with support for Morocco’s territorial unity falling within the broader framework of relations between the two countries.

This position emerges in an international context marked by increasing support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, regarded as a credible and realistic solution, with growing endorsement from significant international powers.
