Bank Al-Maghrib to Withdraw Banknote Denominations Starting January 2026

Bank Al-Maghrib has announced, under the provisions of decree No. 2.25.966 issued on December 23, 2025, that it will begin withdrawing several denominations of Moroccan banknotes from circulation starting January 1, 2026.

The bank clarified in a statement that this decision includes the 10, 50, 100, and 200 dirham notes issued in 1987, the 10 dirham notes issued in 1990, as well as the 20 dirham notes issued in 1996.

The same source indicated that these denominations will lose their legal tender status and payment validity as of January 1, 2026, and will no longer be accepted for transactions.

The statement confirmed that individuals still in possession of these banknotes can exchange them without restrictions at Bank Al-Maghrib counters, as well as at various banking institutions, during the period from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030.
