Italian Media: Morocco Solidifies Its Position as a Preferred Destination for Filming Major Motion Pictures
A recent report by Italian media outlet Cinecittà News highlighted that Morocco has become a favored destination for major international film productions over the years, noting that income from foreign film shoots has tripled in just four years.
The publication emphasized that Morocco attracts significant projects such as “Oppenheimer,” directed by British-American filmmaker Christopher Nolan, which was partially filmed in Ait Benhaddou, Essaouira, and Marrakech, alongside the white sand dunes of Dakhla. It also cited other films like “Siraat” and “Rue Malaga,” which premiered at prestigious international festivals in Cannes and Venice before their debut.
The Italian source noted that television productions also play a vital role in this boom, pointing to the second season of the American series “The Terminal List,” which was filmed in Marrakech, Casablanca, and Tangier.
Additionally, the report mentioned that the opening of new cinemas in 2025 has contributed to an increase in cinema audiences in Morocco, while the Moroccan Cinematic Center continues to support the development of these venues through specialized programs and initiatives.
Cinecittà News also highlighted the Marrakech International Film Festival as the most significant cinematic event in Morocco and the region, indicating that the 22nd edition (November 28 – December 6, 2025) showcased 82 films from around thirty countries, attracting over 47,000 viewers, including 7,000 youths. It affirmed that the festival successfully combined the strength of the international jury, audience engagement, and the presence of professional impact platforms, enabling it to compete with major European festivals.
