Donald Trump Holds Fruitful Call with Putin Before Meeting Zelensky to Discuss Ukraine Crisis Resolution
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had a “very good and fruitful” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of his scheduled meeting on Sunday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social, that the conversation took place before his planned meeting at 1:00 PM Florida time with Zelensky in the main dining room at his Mar-a-Lago estate, noting that the press is invited to cover the gathering.
On the eve of the meeting, Zelensky accused the West of not providing sufficient financial and military support for Ukraine, reiterating his pleas for additional funding to address his country’s financial shortfall and urging his Western partners to expedite assistance. The Kyiv leader also had a phone conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer prior to the meeting with Trump.
Trump stated on Friday that the chances of reaching an agreement with Zelensky are high, but emphasized that any proposed settlements would not be valid without his approval. This meeting comes at a time when Washington and Europe are engaged in a growing debate regarding the level of aid for Ukraine, while Kyiv stresses the necessity of uninterrupted military and financial support.
In this context, the Kremlin indicated that Russia “remains open to negotiations” through the Anchorage dialogue platform, signaling Moscow’s willingness to engage in discussions concerning U.S. proposals for resolution.
