The Deal of the Century in Entertainment: Netflix Swallows Warner Brothers and HBO Max

Netflix has finalized one of the largest transactions in entertainment history after winning the bidding for Warner Bros. Discovery studios, in a deal valued at $83 billion.

The platform’s CEO, Ted Sarandos, described December 5th as a “historic day,” as Netflix prepares to acquire one of the heaviest film libraries in the world, including blockbuster franchises like “Harry Potter” and “Batman,” along with the massive streaming service HBO Max, pending final regulatory approval.

This acquisition signifies a major shift in the industry landscape, as the entire Warner Bros. film library will come under Netflix’s control, enhancing the platform’s influence and granting it unprecedented power in production and distribution.

The deal comes at a time when cinemas are under immense pressure due to declining attendance and an increased reliance on home streaming services, prompting many voices in Hollywood to warn about the impact of platforms on the future of traditional cinema.

To alleviate growing concerns, Sarandos asserted in comments reported by the BBC that Netflix is committed to prioritizing Warner Bros. films for theatrical release before they debut on the platform, aiming to reassure industry professionals and protect the theatrical film lifecycle.

Despite these commitments, debate continues in Hollywood. Director James Cameron recently expressed his opposition to Netflix’s expanding influence, stating that “Netflix films should not win Oscars.” Similarly, director Christopher Nolan ended his long partnership with Warner in 2021 in protest of the decision to release films simultaneously in theaters and on streaming during the COVID-19 pandemic, labeling it a “subversion of the cinematic experience.”

The artistic community is now eagerly awaiting reactions from unions, directors, and producers regarding the deal, which may alter the power dynamics in Hollywood and reignite the long-standing discussion about the future of cinema in the face of the rise of digital streaming. As Netflix celebrates its “historic day,” the future relationship between big screens and digital platforms remains open to all possibilities.
