University Mohammed VI Polyvalent launched a continental scientific platform to enhance technological sovereignty in Africa

On December 4 in Ben Guerir, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) launched the UM6P CoreLabs platform, a multidisciplinary scientific initiative aimed at promoting experimental research, innovation, and training across the African continent. This effort contributes to enhancing Morocco’s scientific and industrial sovereignty and integrating Africa into international knowledge networks.

This initiative addresses the lack of access to major research infrastructures, which are often located outside the continent. CoreLabs provides a comprehensive environment for conducting all stages of research, from observation to verification, following international standards, allowing African researchers to carry out their work locally without relying on external support and maintaining full control over their scientific data.

The platform is divided into three advanced technological platforms:

  1. Imaging and Microscopy Platform, equipped with rare equipment in Africa, such as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Focused Ion Beam (FIB), to facilitate nanotechnology analyses in areas such as materials, energy, precision agriculture, and health.

  2. Biological Sciences Platform, which offers advanced techniques for genetic sequencing and 3D cell imaging, opening new avenues in genomics, biotechnology, precision medicine, and food security.

  3. Analytical Chemistry Platform, specializing in detecting pollutants, trace metals, and emerging substances, which are vital tools for environmental research and the sustainable management of natural resources.

The university affirmed that the project falls within a strategic vision to create an integrated scientific ecosystem linking the university, applied research, and industry. CoreLabs aims to become a continental reference center open to collaboration with African institutions and focused on providing practical solutions to continental challenges.
